Born in Rome, Italy, on November 27, 1951.Graduated cum laude in medicine from the University of Rome "La Sapienza" Medical School on June 23, 1976. Thesis on CNS tumors and chemotherapy with nitrosourea derivatives.
Neurosurgery fellowship and residency at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" Hospital, Neurosurgical Dept., chaired by the late Prof B. Guidetti, and at the National Cancer Institute of Rome, Neurosurgical Division.
Winner (1980) of an official French Government fellowship for six months for cranial base surgery, at the Hôpital Foch Neurosurgical Dept. (Paris), chaired by the late Prof. G. Guiot.
During this fellowship, Dr. Pompili acquired an in-depth understanding of extradural cranial base approaches and of the sublabial-transphenoidal approach to the pituitary.
Knowledge of English, German and French languages.
Ph.D. degree cum laude in neurosurgery, obtained from the University of Rome "La Sapienza" Medical School on November 25, 1980. Thesis on: "Anterior cranial base and sphenoidal ridge meningiomas. Clinical and surgical considerations on 75 cases".

Chief investigator of the "Regina Elena" National Cancer Institute research program on metastatic brain tumors and neuronavigation; mininvasive approaches for removal of sellar tumors; and mininvasive approaches for spinal intradural tumors.
Current coordinator of brain tumor patients' home care research program, funded by the "Regione Lazio " with 550,000 USD every 3 years. Program started in 2001 and ending in 2009.
